Two local women weave themselves into sewing history
Two Paradise women were part of a little sewing history recently when they joined more than 12,000 sewers participating in the largest nationwide consumer sewing event, a Singer-brand representative said.
Singer cast a wide net via popular consumer party website houseparty.com for people to host sewing events the weekend of May 7. More than 800 hosts in 37 states answered the call to talk Singer and sew together.
Local teachers and mothers Nancy Bleuer and Xela McArthur hosted separate parties during the weekend. The women have hosted other houseparty.com affairs, which promote in-home parties where a brand or product is the focus. The product’s company sends freebies and coupons for hosts and guests to try to sometimes submit feedback.
“This is the updated version of a Tupperware party,” Bleuer said.
The women have hosted other promotional parties for friends and family, with products ranging from TruMoo Milk and Philadelphia Cream Cheese to dry-erase markers and fitness DVDs . The Singer party included tutorials of a new sewing machine, and guests received a coupon to buy their own.
Bleuer and McArthur purchased the machines, too .
McArthur said that she applies to host parties only when she really likes a product. She fancies herself a sewer but doesn’t have much time to sew lately as a mom of two.
“With this machine, it’ll make it more convenient to have time to sew,” she said.
She is waiting to host an Expo-brand dry-erase board party because her family can get involved.
“My kids have seen us do the parties, and they want to join,” she said.
Bleuer has hosted five houseparty.com shindigs, and she was to the point about why it appeals to her.
“I like free stuff,” she said. “I’m a couponer, and that’s one thing that’s really neat about it. You get a whole bunch of coupons in the box.”
