Re-blogging: Lessons Learned – Recapping Jen’s 30/30 Wardrobe Challenge

This was by far my most favorite challenge for the entire year. I can’t wait to do it again in 2012. This time I’m planning to limit it to only 30 pieces of clothing and 5 pairs of shoes. This is going to take some gearing up for but I’m enthusiastically looking forward to it.

Enjoy!!

Just to recap my original post:

April 2011

Why this challenge: I have lots of clothes however there are days when I can’t find anything to wear therefore I resort to the same articles of clothing and they become part of my regular rotation. You know the same black pants, I have four pairs. The same white shirt. So safe and so tired.  There have been times I wore black pants twice in the same week. I should give them a rest.  There are clothes I have I have never worn and the idea is to wear them this month.  And besides I thought it would be fun to challenge myself. I saw on a blog where a woman challenged herself to wear the same 30 pieces of clothing for 30 days. I’m not quite ready for that yet. Baby steps. Essentially I want to wear the clothes I own or get rid of them.

May 2011

I discovered many things about myself and my clothing during Jen’s 30/30 Wardrobe Challenge”. I’m certain many of these discovery’s could be applied to almost any woman who is even halfway fashion conscious  and attempting to keep her wardrobe up to date.

To begin with I will share with you what I learned about my clothing:

*   I’ve got lots of clothes (more than my share)

*   I don’t own enough pants

*   I still don’t like skirts. As you see I only wore them 4 times in the month

*   I’d like to have more color in my wardrobe.  Even though I work in a pretty conservative environment a little more color wouldn’t hurt. For spring I need more pink, light  blue, reds and yellow.

*   I’m really low on shirts and blouses

*   I have waaay too much beige, brown and blue. That’s boooooring. From now on I will shop color (light greens, peach, orange,)

*   I have four brown skirts! I don’t even like skirts like that. Why do I have so many brown skirts? (at least two must go)

*   The two piece suit and cami is my best combo for the spring

*  Long dresses are flattering and comfortable to wear. Prior to the challenge I owned 2 now I own 5 thanks to swapping

*  Accessories make all the difference in the world when coordinating an outfit. I need more. Can you say accessories swap?? hmmmm……

What I learned about myself:

*  My  friends have great clothes and they  will give me their clothes…….I don’t even have to ask. How cool is that 🙂

*  Swaps and donating to Goodwill is really fantastic way to reduce my carbon footprint and protect our landfills

*  Attempting to wear a different item everyday made me realize what items I was lacking in my wardrobe and what I truly need to get rid of. (Such the items below. I took them to the last swap)

*  Did I mention I don’t like skirts?? I gave away three during the last swap.

*  Cleaning out my closets prior to beginning this challenge made it 100 times better to figure out what I will wear the next day

*  A two and a half-inch heel is all I need to be comfortable the entire day. Bringing tat extra pair of shoes is cumbersome

*  I’m an excellent wardrobe planner. Can you say new skill set?? I worked with my first customer this past weekend. I think I might be on to something

*  I don’t think I can ever go back to shopping in department stores again. Ever……

   Finally

Here it is the 11th of the month and I still haven’t worn anything I had on in April. I’m still pulling items from my closets to wear. WOWZERS! How long could this go on??? 60 Days??

By the way I have already started building my stash for the next Swap! (coming soon) yes I still have more clothing to give 🙂

Final Day of the challenge

(Still catching up on the wardrobe challenge)

YAY!!! I made it. With only one slip up in 30 days. What a relief to be done with this challenge. 🙂

After playing dress up this morning I changed clothes and spent most of the day running around preparing for the swap. I picked up tables, raffle prizes, food, drinks and even made a visit to Joann Fabrics. Notions wall was 50% off. What a treat and a pleasant surprise! I felt totally inspired and ready to get sewing. Too bad I won’t have any time this weekend 😦 however my creative juices are definitely flowing.

Below is the morning wardrobe change. First time I’ve worn these pieces and it’s definitely one of my favorites.

*Ann Taylor  Navy Blue and White Jacket (Goodwill)

*Ann Taylor White Linen skirt (Goodwill)

*Spanish made navy blue pumps (Swap)

Ann Taylor Jacket. Goodwill $3

Ann Taylor 2 tiered linen skirt $5

Spanish made leather pumps I picked up two months ago at Frugal Fashionista Clothing Swap

For Shopping the rest of the afternoon I decided to wear a tee-shirt I purchased when I attended Shecky’s Night out DC. My love for butterflies will permeate my wardrobe this weekend.

*White Tee Shirt with  a butterfly made of sequins

*Gap low-rise black boot-cut jeans

Silver Sequined Butterfly tee shirt ($10) with black gap jeans

Day 29 of my 30 Day Wardrobe Challenge

One more day……..Although I may attempt to continue this challenge on my own I will be glad to get back to some of my favorite jeans on the weekends and my favorite pair of black pants and shoes during the week. Today’s photo includes my dog. I tried to take this photo 4 times when I realized he wasn’t going anywhere.

Stay tuned for lessons learned from this wardrobe challenge next week,

* Blouse – Vertigo/Paris

*Pants – Handmade by me

Day 28 of the 30 Day Wardrobe Challenge

(Still playing catch up-almost done)

Each day of the last week of this challenge gets more difficult.  It begins with the challenge of figuring out what to wear each day then couple that with the inconsistent weather in the DC area and  not to mention having to take these photos everyday. (I don’t enjoy that)

I’m excited about lessons learned and I will have so much to share in May about making wardrobe decisions and coordination. I love fashion and I love sewing. Problem is I don’t have much time for sewing however I do have time to visit various thrift shops and work on some DIY or re-fashioning projects. I’ve discovered this is my new love. Take something old and create something new.  After my upcoming thrift store tour of the DMV in May I will begin several re-fashioning projects. I hope to find some great vintage pieces while on the tour. In fact we have a “Refashioning” Class coming up in two weeks. Students are asked to bring in and outfit we can work to breath new life into.

Today I had the pleasure of attending a fabulous event at the Philip Sousa Band Hall at the Naval Yard on Capitol Hill.  I wore this black and cream Anne Taylor wrap dress I picked up a Goodwill Rockville, MD last month for a mere $6.07. I love this dress and the fit (although the photo does it no justice).  It’s so very comfortable and I didn’t find myself adjusting it or worrying about the fit at all. I received many compliments and I smiled on the inside knowing I only spent 6 bucks!

Day 26 of 30 Days 30 Outfits

Now that this wardrobe challenge is winding down and the weather is getting warmer my options are opening up. Today I had to make two clothing changes and had a chance to tap into my summer wardrobe. This made me very happy. So first for work I chose a denim dress and a bright yellow sweater. I’ve never worn the sweater before and I’m not sure why. It’s a very comfortable sweater and fits just right. Maybe I didn’t pair it with the right pants or skirt. The dress is one of my favorites.

*Calvin Klein Sweater (Marshalls 2010)

*Studio 1 Dress (Marshalls 2010)

*Nina shoes (Mustard- 2008)

This evening I spent a “frugal” evening with my girlfriends at Bowlmor Lanes. This evening was their Grand Opening with free food, drinks and free bowling. It Doesn’t get any better than that. We had so much fun! I wore jeans and a silk blouse I bought 2 years ago. It still had the tags on it! Seriously I need to extend this challenge just so that I can wear the clothes in my closet.

*Silk Blouse (Loemanns-Feb 2009)

*Gap low rise jeans (Jan 2009)

*Nine west leather sandals (july 2009)

Day 25 of 30 Days 30 Outfits

One word for today H-O-T! It was sweltering this afternoon. Linen was the only fabric to be worn today. I wore a salmon colored suit I made a few years back and it was quite cool. Better than having the hot sun beaming down on me during the Easter Egg Roll.

Five more days and we are wrapping up this challenge. I can then start wearing some of the new items I have picked up over the last 30 days
